Last year I did a poster for Primus, for a gig in Omaha NE. I loved doing it, and now I finally pulled my finger out and sorted some Artists edition prints to sell. They’re on my shop <a href="http://pyeparr.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">now</a>!</div>

For the last year Alec Worley and I've been working on a new horror comic called Realm of the Damned, and yesterday, finally, we finished it - so I figure its about time to post some artwork!<br />
<br />
It's a 130ish page supernatural gorefest - here's some of my favourite (and least spoilery) panels:<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf9yUdC_6GNt80eePDv1-B5DMreCPebY1UlNu1-q8Io4n8XEx-2OmD1y2Ghioiu2amMlt3LcpnsO4EwZs3acwMtz-dh-umGL6lWGPmhIkQyOX2w09E1iX0Gw8WkFXtxacOCYoy7viuWd8/s1600/cannonbridge+cover+art.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf9yUdC_6GNt80eePDv1-B5DMreCPebY1UlNu1-q8Io4n8XEx-2OmD1y2Ghioiu2amMlt3LcpnsO4EwZs3acwMtz-dh-umGL6lWGPmhIkQyOX2w09E1iX0Gw8WkFXtxacOCYoy7viuWd8/s640/cannonbridge+cover+art.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I had two days to come up with and finish this (it went to print today and I only started it on Monday morning), which was a bit hairy... Actually that's a lie, I've known I had to do it for weeks, but it just kept getting pushed down the list til it was AAARGHURGENT! Nothing focuses the mind like a looming deadline, and your boss asking "you done that yet?" every day for a week...<br />
<br />
Here's the blurb:<br />
<div class="p1">
<i><span class="s1">Flamboyant Matthew Cannonbridge was touched by genius, the most influential mind of the 19th century, a novelist, playwright, the poet of his generation. The only problem is, he should never have existed, and recently divorced 21st century don Toby Judd is the only person to realise </span>something is wrong with history.</i></div>
<div class="p1">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="p1">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5PrcG866LOCXWmf2RGGuByB-uG4YeQHnSZVJVIuWRcSYy2HzdDmdWp15zrguTnzZkBEa4nGzcRADxzuaf7N9W8t7otCukFNiuxx2_bOgYn8OgqF93Gb6fnN7nJt4VOAhpeJTFQyfkCKo/s1600/mockup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5PrcG866LOCXWmf2RGGuByB-uG4YeQHnSZVJVIuWRcSYy2HzdDmdWp15zrguTnzZkBEa4nGzcRADxzuaf7N9W8t7otCukFNiuxx2_bOgYn8OgqF93Gb6fnN7nJt4VOAhpeJTFQyfkCKo/s320/mockup.jpg" width="208" /></a>Quite a cool idea. Unfortuntely I kept getting stuck on images and ideas that were too similar to my Fictional Man cover (i.e. people made from words), and had trouble thinking of anything new. </div>
<div class="p1">
I thought about making an origami man from book pages and either taking some photos, or faking one in photoshop, but I ditched that as the only origami patterns available were either rock hard or complete shit.</div>
<div class="p1">
With no time left I settled on a kind of wormhole through some old looking manuscript pages, with a victorian cameo silhouette of Cannonbridge revealed at the bottom. Here's the rough.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUhr9jzBJZ21WF8rrHuzCMQUq4AIzKTBFJgfhe8GQB6EO4QHkBFh2XNTJCu8JsUCqppe4rkyUe0P8LYr5mq5rbuk7bSNvRcvcdj96ErVaUmafCYCu8UsQtbzWM-ZSrV9xL63XxrNkLtVk/s1600/paper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUhr9jzBJZ21WF8rrHuzCMQUq4AIzKTBFJgfhe8GQB6EO4QHkBFh2XNTJCu8JsUCqppe4rkyUe0P8LYr5mq5rbuk7bSNvRcvcdj96ErVaUmafCYCu8UsQtbzWM-ZSrV9xL63XxrNkLtVk/s200/paper.jpg" width="152" /></a>To try and stop it looking <i>too</i> faked, I spent about 2 hours printing out a yellow texture onto A3 bits of paper, then tore gradually smaller and smaller holes into each, scrunched them up into balls, squashed them flat again, scanned them in one at a time and assembled them in photoshop. The resulting papery mess is still on my desk - it looks kind of cool!</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
About halfway through I realised it would look much better if Cannonbridge's face appeared naturally in the negative space left by the torn holes, rather than just plonked as silhouette at the bottom. It meant a bit more work, but was a million times cooler than the incongruous silhouette I had on the rough. Glad I thought of it too, as it's the kind of thing you'd come up with afterwards and kick yourself for not doing.</div>
<div class="p1">
Lastly I typeset some passages of text from the story and pasted it randomly over the blank page scans, then spent quite a long time mucking with the shadows and colours to get it looking convincingly deep. The final cover design is below.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyf0SDmaXppGelj_dTGkq_aLBe0QP3MRlzxhoJkvCFPEZ9euub8xm5yZxrZVg41HYkFpHkfIFVjMEwikJSsOPAwJ6H9WdckeLyby13kMEERU8QbUDQ9TbzwXlIgvRzvCliFWW9tvzMSXM/s1600/full+cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyf0SDmaXppGelj_dTGkq_aLBe0QP3MRlzxhoJkvCFPEZ9euub8xm5yZxrZVg41HYkFpHkfIFVjMEwikJSsOPAwJ6H9WdckeLyby13kMEERU8QbUDQ9TbzwXlIgvRzvCliFWW9tvzMSXM/s320/full+cover.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not sure what I think about it yet. Normally I get a bit more time to indulge in a bit bit of navel gazing, but cos of the time constraints I just had to get it done. On one hand thats quite freeing as you just have to go with your instincts and trust it'll turn out ok, but looking back at the rough now I wonder I the final version has lost a bit of the punch that the first one had... I like the red in it, and the kind of energy to the hole... <i>ABORT! ABORT! move on... it's too late now!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Not often you get to write that as a header without feeling like a total tosspot... Anyway, this is the cover for The Awesome by Eva Darrows, a YA novel from Ravenstone </span></span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;">about a kick arse teenage vampire hunter from a family of kick arse vampire hunters, who all of a sudden has to try and fit in with normal society, find a boyfriend and lose her virginity before she starts sending the vamps crazy (which is what happens apparently). The brief was pretty open so I </span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;">tried to do something that was the exact opposite of the tedious 'hunks/babes in a blue graveyard' Buffy/Twilight inspired stuff you get on Urban Fantasy books a lot of the time. Plus, if I could get away with using evil looking dayglo green skulls and neon pink text I'd be well happy.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The skull was drawn straight into Photoshop (we have a cool plastic skull model in the Rebellion office that I used as reference) with the white, black and grey on separate layers</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">. Once I was happy with the form I pasted it over the rough (which I did a full size) and started to muck with the colours. I've been keen to try this for a while (previously when drawing in this style I kept the lines black), as one of the problems I found with high contrast black and white art is that it's really tough to get any text on top to stand out. Beyond that it was pretty simple; The title text needed some work to make it more readable, and I drew the heart patterns in illustrator to make them more uniform, but all the colours and stuff were sampled straight from the rough layout. </span></span><!--EndFragment--><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnbaGayqwJmtH6wo2s2dUCSwHwj88dM6Y1YDdjo7KRVJstrweH4GACg707ciziBSOBKwcWmkVMt5-FjELLYq0dmfXpx9r5P9DKqHN01EYSgNzT7NzRfrkOhwTLLHzfZFDFNagWVe299q8/s1600/NYCTOPHOBIA+COVER+ART+UK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnbaGayqwJmtH6wo2s2dUCSwHwj88dM6Y1YDdjo7KRVJstrweH4GACg707ciziBSOBKwcWmkVMt5-FjELLYq0dmfXpx9r5P9DKqHN01EYSgNzT7NzRfrkOhwTLLHzfZFDFNagWVe299q8/s1600/NYCTOPHOBIA+COVER+ART+UK.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
Nyctophobia is fear of the dark, which is a hard concept to get across on a book cover, especially without resorting to monsters and ghosts and stuff (which I did to start with!), so I did a LOT of roughs and not-so-roughs for this cover - none of which were used in the end, as the final covers had nothing in common with them really! The idea for the UK cover (above) came out of a day dream I had at my desk after banging my head against a wall for half an hour having run out of ideas. It's based on some photos I took of a lightbulb was almost finished as soon as I'd mocked it up. The US version (below) was kind of an accident - I was mucking around with some textures for something else and they looked kind of noirish and spooky, so I added a house and a moon and it was pretty much done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8zE2S5PHnELpcRIt1LsMS2cIeoFFZXFu7leE2_SPkzET5VUjKlnKIXfiAIZmLAcbJhxYCdPqejM5wa0-bgtPrXZcCF5goZePw698GEzu1I31Ap5NN5-g1GPa36bfuVV3BkbbpVpBf3OY/s1600/NYCTOPHOBIA+COVER+ART+US.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8zE2S5PHnELpcRIt1LsMS2cIeoFFZXFu7leE2_SPkzET5VUjKlnKIXfiAIZmLAcbJhxYCdPqejM5wa0-bgtPrXZcCF5goZePw698GEzu1I31Ap5NN5-g1GPa36bfuVV3BkbbpVpBf3OY/s1600/NYCTOPHOBIA+COVER+ART+US.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
I still really like some of the rough ideas I had to start with, so I might try and reuse parts of them in something else in the future. They were deemed (correctly!) to be too graphic-novely for the tone of the book, or just a bit too supernatural/action based. I got quite far in the rendering of a few of my favourite ones too, so its a shame to just forget about them. Anyway here's the very first lot I did. Originally in the story the house were the action takes place revolved to face the sun, so one side was light all the time, and the other dark. That idea got dropped though, so immediately some of these weren't quite right. An unfortunate side effect of doing covers for books that aren't yet finished.<br />

The below was the cover version I liked best, but I couldn't make it work quite right - the figure was too small, or squashed up, and the shadows cast by the lamp that form the letters didn't work in the way I wanted them to. This led into the version at the bottom, which used the same idea, but makes it a bit less flat. This was definitely too much like a comic though, although I like it in its own right. I might finish it off at some point just for the sake of it.</div>

The final book goes to print this week. On the opening spreads of the internals I gave over a few pages for the lightbulb slowly tuning on, page by page - almost like a flick-book, which seemed like a cool thing to have instead of a bog-standard title page. It gave me the idea of actually trying to animate it properly though, and this is the result (be kind, it my first ever attempt at this kind of thing!).</div>

More cover art, using the same style as the Lupus Rex cover I did a few weeks ago for reason other than I thought it looked cool and wanted to try it again! The sky is a darker colour than I wanted originally cos I screwed up and couldnt get the coverlines to standout properly (again)!<br />
Final cover design, black and white linework and roughs below. The Green man face is a little pic for the chapter break pages on the internals, which was shamelessly ripped off from some photo ref supplied to me by the author, so I can't claim much credit for that. Pleased with the Raven though!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This cover is for a second edition printing of Lupus Rex by John Carter Cash, published by Ravenstone. The first edition hardback had a cover by Douglas Smith (which was lovely - I did the design work for it, and was really proud of how it turned out). When we came to do a paperback reprint for the UK I got the chance to do something myself. The US paperback got a new cover too - by Edouard Groult one of Rebellion's concept artists - but both that and Douglas's original were quite similar in tone if not style, so I went in as different a direction as I could think of.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div>
I did the main illustration quite quickly, all freehand in photoshop, but using the lasso tool to both add and remove texture from the wolfs fur. It worked quite well so I'm hoping to use he technique again in the future. The cover text was slightly more problematic. Because the picture was high contrast and in simple colours, it was very difficult to make the text stand out in any colour other than white, which annoyed me slightly as I'd tried very hard to <i>not</i> use white anywhere in the image - and its doesn't appear anywhere else on the front or back cover design. This is something that's likely to bother me more than anyone else though, so after several hours of mucking around I left it as it is above.</div>
<div>
Below are the roughs I came up with to start with (I knew early on I wanted to do something <i>almost</i> designey - using silhouettes, just had to decide what, and how), and the full cover layout.<br />
<br />

Putting the flying quail in the spine logo was one of the last things I did - and possibly my favourite thing on the cover now, if I'd have thought of it earlier, it could have gone in a totally different direction.</div>

<b>Ford GT40</b></div>

<i>20x30" Oil on canvas board.</i></div>
<br />
Awesome looking Ford GT40 I saw race in the 50th anniversary cup at Goodwood Revival last year. Got my mate <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/scattergun_uk/" target="_blank">Kev</a> to take some photos of the final painting this week cos it's off to a gallery soon and maybe I'll never see it again.<br />
A few work in progress pictures below. I did this in 4 sessions of about 2 hours each. Was quite tempted to stop working on it at every stage after the 2nd. Had a nice solidity to it throughout and I was scared to lose the energy by tightening it up too much.<br />
<br />
This painting is for sale - get in touch if you're interested!<br />

Another car I saw racing, this time at Shelsley Walsh a few years ago. Looked awesome so I went and took some pictures of it in the pits. I finished this directly before the GT40 above. Bit of a breakthrough for me cos it's got a lot more movement than my previous paintings, which is something I;d like to carry on.<br />
There's a few in-progress photos below. Not so many this time - I think I fell out with this picture for a while in the middle section so didn't document what I was doing! I read something once that said (to badly paraphrase) every painting has to go through a stage where it looks vile, somewhere between the promise of the rough sketch and the final art where its neither one thing or another. Certainly seems true in my experience.<br />
<br />
This painting is also for sale. Again, let me know if you're interested.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsA8GPozxwFDW6LhNmnaMjyLy9OkeR1ltJikcFOeU9aYE67Yo5CPqbzsrkfsTQMQsHdGnrIo1kPcOQ2llWHyrCQbh3uXCQmGQxoMnx3t7QOxDVxGxkXwGlw6D3zbRu8pSpEx8hY88KHrs/s1600/ABC+SOLO+MISSIONS+flat+square+RGB+1000px.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="397" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsA8GPozxwFDW6LhNmnaMjyLy9OkeR1ltJikcFOeU9aYE67Yo5CPqbzsrkfsTQMQsHdGnrIo1kPcOQ2llWHyrCQbh3uXCQmGQxoMnx3t7QOxDVxGxkXwGlw6D3zbRu8pSpEx8hY88KHrs/s400/ABC+SOLO+MISSIONS+flat+square+RGB+1000px.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I pretty much begged for the chance to do this cover. Well, I didn't, but I would have. I fucking love the ABC Warriors. When I was about 12 and it appeared in 2000 AD, Khronicles of Khaos was pretty much the most brain meltingly amazing thing I'd ever read - It was funny, weird, really violent and looked amazing. Plus it was crammed full of bad-ass robots and strange aliens, and the only humans in it were these vile grotesques. Amazing stuff, and quite formative for me really, both as an artist and in terms of things I like to read.<br />
Anyway, above is the full, finished artwork for The Solo Missions, a collection of ABC Warriors one-off stories from annuals/specials etc, plus the Deadlock solo story from 2000 AD a few years ago.<br />
The processes I used to do it were, as usual for me, far too complicated and laborious but I thoroughly enjoy making things hard for myself and its all worth it when it turns out well - like this one did, hopefully.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3E5yu3PaF0bUq43zOCj6qMzCtsJhuAYSdfkw3V55bS84GzJQH8fJscBWVJVK7nCY_b8LjG3jwyBsaeOPPRlG_7SNihDtIHxXd3ctJXJ95Uk4tFw5LdagCvC8eDtadDFM9cWcZ36yumY/s1600/abcs+mockups.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3E5yu3PaF0bUq43zOCj6qMzCtsJhuAYSdfkw3V55bS84GzJQH8fJscBWVJVK7nCY_b8LjG3jwyBsaeOPPRlG_7SNihDtIHxXd3ctJXJ95Uk4tFw5LdagCvC8eDtadDFM9cWcZ36yumY/s400/abcs+mockups.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After drawing some bloody awful group shots in photoshop - trying to somehow get the 'Solo Missions' theme across but showing all 7 characters at once - I came up with the layout above, which is kinda cool, and also shamelessly plays to my strengths (vehicles/techy stuff/big skies/space). I did it quite straight on the page to start with but realised pretty quickly it would look more dynamic at an angle, and I could make the bike bigger in the frame without losing any of the dead space for text.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAp7XqahXsxMkYBdH4u48iXsYsSpT_U3o2WB5i0MVM4pwTmJmpWr6XNX96Z3K7Jq6E84R34hqY5BetSlaStZhCllW__e3tKwSsOXWeEvQJso62jPBd6I3L8kKX26N6ilZ7nF36UbMgZvU/s1600/mesa+VECTORS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAp7XqahXsxMkYBdH4u48iXsYsSpT_U3o2WB5i0MVM4pwTmJmpWr6XNX96Z3K7Jq6E84R34hqY5BetSlaStZhCllW__e3tKwSsOXWeEvQJso62jPBd6I3L8kKX26N6ilZ7nF36UbMgZvU/s400/mesa+VECTORS.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEKLK0tLyJcGV_zexRPdSu3UnQyzyd36Nssc6m0s5GgSvK1GUCGLobw5NLIPOt38y6yUFk2USVIGGPKR51Bs526kK_YO049DKtT1kedW0qMYTRQT2Ut__uN50smlenk6LRv6HoslfG5D4/s1600/bike+perspective+grid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="164" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEKLK0tLyJcGV_zexRPdSu3UnQyzyd36Nssc6m0s5GgSvK1GUCGLobw5NLIPOt38y6yUFk2USVIGGPKR51Bs526kK_YO049DKtT1kedW0qMYTRQT2Ut__uN50smlenk6LRv6HoslfG5D4/s320/bike+perspective+grid.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next I jumped into Adobe Illustrator for the background. I could have done this in photohop, but I like the sharpness and endless editability you can get with the vector shapes, and I've really enjoyed making big layered landscapes in this way recently on some other covers like Different Kingdom. I also made myself a perspective grid and some basic forms for the bike, which I printed out onto some drawing paper to use as a guide when doing the pencils for the foreground.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ2Otj1dE_pLCaN05u6BRW71b4CJQJDgUeVT5y9-u41bLkByGVZQvf812CROBrsgj6vVbQ5aW6nE1j4RoAZMHYJ76hdQbVxVGqGhygTTBSwr-s-5lvqMJm0n5mFm6FlbD4HqMi9ikiyl0/s1600/DEADLOCK+pencils.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ2Otj1dE_pLCaN05u6BRW71b4CJQJDgUeVT5y9-u41bLkByGVZQvf812CROBrsgj6vVbQ5aW6nE1j4RoAZMHYJ76hdQbVxVGqGhygTTBSwr-s-5lvqMJm0n5mFm6FlbD4HqMi9ikiyl0/s640/DEADLOCK+pencils.jpg" width="419" /></a></div>
<br />
I scanned the pencils back in and inked them in photoshop, then slowly built up the colour and background objects I'd made in illustrator together into one massive file. For reasons best known to myself I did it at actual size, but 600dpi, which meant the file at the end (which had a LOT of layers) was almost a Gb in size. This got a bit risky towards the end as my mac was really starting to grind... I had a few moments where I thought it had just given up.<br />
Finally I flattened the art, imported it into Indesign and added the cover text. Here's the final cover as it'll appear on the shelves:<br />
<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
This is the second cover I've done for the Different Kingdoms series by Paul Kearney, kind of time/space slip novels about people swapping between real and fantasy worlds. The layout is identical to the first book, which made it far easier to get on with as all the design work and style is set in stone, and I can just start making the art. However, I'm also still very pleased with how the <a href="http://pyeparr.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/a-different-kingdom.html" target="_blank">cover for book one</a> turned out, so it was slightly intimidating knowing I had to match the quality of that, which is a bit of a high point for me I think. Overall I reckon I did a good job - i don't think the main image is quite as atmospheric as before, but the colours and texturing are much better, and the two books sit together pretty well.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixK1jf4MDtXwyuNwvzBpYoB-_Oiibi7mDor20K9mSiYkOSuIGNtgwlzKYxLkWtfyMsb_7FwN8BUGIvKyEEwYlMrubseRFiJSAxcDgDFdZbm5BJLNWdRJl_w7l54ysYMDnCzk2PY6o_G3o/s1600/way+wip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixK1jf4MDtXwyuNwvzBpYoB-_Oiibi7mDor20K9mSiYkOSuIGNtgwlzKYxLkWtfyMsb_7FwN8BUGIvKyEEwYlMrubseRFiJSAxcDgDFdZbm5BJLNWdRJl_w7l54ysYMDnCzk2PY6o_G3o/s400/way+wip.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As before I started the cover in Indesign, laying out the text on a file that i'll eventually use to make the pdf files for print, so I can work around the words when I draw image in the centre and nothing overlaps awkwardly. I then copy/paste these basic shapes in Illustrator to draw the pictures, building up layers of increasingly dark detail to give it depth. This time round there's a strange symmetry between the 2 sides, which wasn't initially intentional - things like the wall in the foreground on both halves, and the broken cart vs the old wheelchair. Plus the general contrasting style of the 2 large buildings. I might carry this on to book 3 if possible, to add another level of detail into the art.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next I paste these black and white vectors into photoshop and go to town with the textures to add some colour and life, also using the same indesign shapes from earlier as layer masks to show the edges of the circles and the split between the worlds, which gets lost a bit when doing the illustrator work. I also add in some leaves and rougher detail which is much easier in photoshop than illustrator. Next up: book 3!</div>

Another bit of cover art finished. Doing loads at the moment to get ahead for my impending Paternity Leave. This is for Blood Kin by Steve Tem. He was really keen for it to be a proper bit of overgrown, rotting, slightly psychedelic southern gothic. Below is the cover art without cropping/text design, which for once I didn't try and incorporate from the start.<br />

<br />
As this cover has quite a lot of similar elements to Different Kingdom (trees/old houses/leaves) I was keen to make it as different as possible stylistically, so I inked most of the silhouettes by hand then put them all together afterwards in photoshop. For the Kudzu leaves in the foreground I made a some custom brushes in photoshop and built up layers of ever brighter/bigger leaves. Really helped to add some depth to what was quite a flat silhouetted picture. The skull in the bottom right was a last minute addition too. I loved doing this - the whole process/technique I used is something I'm keen to try again!<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
A Different Kingdom is the first book in a series of three by Paul Kearney, originally published by Gollancz in the early 90s. They're all stand alone stories, but are linked thematically rather than by any particular plot, and generally involve people slipping between normal and fantasy worlds and vice-versa. Anyway Solaris are re-issuing them soon, and this is the cover I did them.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFJ35Vjp55WShMhyLLLmheI5DLGnit0qG_NKnnIuGzTcAJwji_HpjiN3Uh_xH2rwcpHoqg0W4dj-SoctisS7YBlmFyoo03TDG5g7XNz7li8Up_H17R8bndkYrkthwLt09S7HorzaBlSNE/s1600/tree+vector.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFJ35Vjp55WShMhyLLLmheI5DLGnit0qG_NKnnIuGzTcAJwji_HpjiN3Uh_xH2rwcpHoqg0W4dj-SoctisS7YBlmFyoo03TDG5g7XNz7li8Up_H17R8bndkYrkthwLt09S7HorzaBlSNE/s400/tree+vector.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All the cover elements were created in Adobe Illustrator, before being pasted, one layer at a time, into Photoshop for colour and texturing. The text and general layout was all done in InDesign, all of which had to be pasted into photoshop too, to use as layer masks when hiding/fading parts of the artwork.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU7ZMuFM0GTn3KRpd5ivnVfnrHEDPOupPQttpVXGHhO1_vMns4LnLHgofWC5ShxNiXYKa9Rch5FDCjqJYClJne3dgCZh1hZ9Vqv11pzGNkv8ys6FcO-UBuyuSRkeFUmgxo445-MbzF4CY/s1600/VILLAGE+vector.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU7ZMuFM0GTn3KRpd5ivnVfnrHEDPOupPQttpVXGHhO1_vMns4LnLHgofWC5ShxNiXYKa9Rch5FDCjqJYClJne3dgCZh1hZ9Vqv11pzGNkv8ys6FcO-UBuyuSRkeFUmgxo445-MbzF4CY/s400/VILLAGE+vector.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The hardest part for me here was deciding how to create the contrast between both the real and fantasy halves of the picture and the main book background without ending up with some part of the image in negative. My first idea was literally just a spot with two silhouettes in, which I'm glad I managed to ditch, although it took me a while to work out how... </div>

<span style="text-align: center;">Up until 3 days <i>after</i> the print deadline this cover didn't exist. I'd mocked up loads and loads of cover designs for this book over a period of weeks, </span><span style="text-align: center;">and none of them were ever quite right,</span><span style="text-align: center;"> before finally settling on a photofit style thing (below). </span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;">Anyway, w</span><span style="text-align: center;">hilst hurriedly designing the books' interior (having already blown the deadline) it suddenly dawned on me that a simple black and white scalpel/text layout I'd put together for the title page looked far more striking than the proper cover image, so I completely redesigned the whole thing that afternoon!</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
First off: this is a fabulous book, go and read it. I hope I've done it justice with this cover, because it really is one of the best things Solaris have published. In the book, characters from novels can be programmed into clone bodies to act in TV shows and Hollywood movies, so for the cover I decided to make a face from words and sentences, and Al sent me passage of text from the story to use for this purpose. I like the weird way the sentences form new ones as they run alongside each other. My workmates were particularly amused by the 'I Hate Drawing' that appears above the right eyebrow (complete accident, and untrue). This has also got to be the first piece of art I've done that required proof-reading...</div>

<br />
Aside from the colours, the back cover and spine layout for the US version are very similar to the UK one, but the American sales team/buyers weren't taken with the crop (or much else) on the original mockup. Initially I just extended the drawing out further than I intended and added Al's name into the face, but i felt in lost some of the impact from the UK one, so decided to just do a more traditional book title design, using the art as a design element rather than the whole cover. Below are some of the many colour options I came up with to try and placate them to start with. I like the repetition in this - it makes it looks quite surreal...<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Not much to say about this one as it was really quick to do. It's an ebook only novella, bizarrely about the native american trickster god Coyote and the hunt for his missing penis, which usually resides in a bag around his neck (yep!). After knocking a few ideas around I came up with this ridiculously phallic totem pole made up of imagery from the story, hoping Pat would see the funny side of it and not think I was taking the piss out of his book! Happily he thought it was pretty funny too, and suggested a ton of cool stuff to add in.<br />
The roulette wheels on either side got removed in the name of good taste, but I've included them here because, frankly, I'm juvenile. Pointless fact: the Saxon runes at the bottom say PYE.</div>

This is the second book in the series by Lou and as ever she's ace to work with. Ridiculously enthusiastic, full of ideas for inspiration, but quite happy for me to try whatever I think might look good on the covers. I'm really pleased with this, especially as an evolution and improvment of the design from the first book, so it still matches the style but without me having to tread old ground.</div>

I love painting space. It was nice to add in some graphics this time too, although the numbers (representing stocks and shares) were a complete nightmare to do - I sat for an hour or so typing about 800 descending random 4 digit sequences, without causing weird repetitions and stuff. My first bit of art for 2013! Cover for the second Solaris Rising anthology edited by Ian Whates. These covers can be quite text-heavy so I laid the words and planets out together in Indesign/Illustrator before starting in Photoshop to make sure I left enough room for everything, a technique I first tried last year on the Solaris Rising 1.5 ebook. Works quite well this way, as the text really sits in and around the art. Here's the final cover, fully extextinated (yeah, it's a word):<br />

The volume 1.5 ebook cover. Really happy with the fuzzyness of this:<br />

I keep thinking one day I'm gonna stick a spaceship on one of these covers. Here's a couple of roughs I tried, one slightly more in earnest than the other...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM1XoV387gd0BSe-WBrrBh3fiBr0nXdV63UsKRGHnQ01Mw5j3_GVqiFYCo3DCiXay9VVY4Vkfktw_y7-Vtx5IqJhrKQ7dr4JiyX80PkdO-xonvadYGFiwK_cDcfGql00tp8gk1kplI6Es/s1600/solaris+rising+2+cover+art+ship.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM1XoV387gd0BSe-WBrrBh3fiBr0nXdV63UsKRGHnQ01Mw5j3_GVqiFYCo3DCiXay9VVY4Vkfktw_y7-Vtx5IqJhrKQ7dr4JiyX80PkdO-xonvadYGFiwK_cDcfGql00tp8gk1kplI6Es/s400/solaris+rising+2+cover+art+ship.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I started both images as vectors/fonts in Illustrator and Indesign to get the layouts right, before pasting all the basic shapes as separate layers into Photoshop for colour and texturing. Here's roughly the how the files started off:<br />

<br />
Ravenstone is a new Children's and Young Adult publishing imprint set up by Rebellion. For the last few weeks I've been doing all the branding and stuff for them in anticipation of the launch, starting off with a basic logo design, but applying that style to all the promotional items, sales sheets and website etc. There's still a lot to do, as they haven't actually published a book yet, but here is some of the stuff I've done so far.<br />
First up, and most important, was the logo. I offered up quite a few options when designing it, just sketching loosely in photoshop:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeYm3koMMKlQzIydAPgQLINzNlaY-pgue1r7V063HUfxbZ8DXU_R7CHe5Z1JuxPEh_sl7GPMEvCnoVORfH7EaoYFt1WLnsRhjMJ4xNE83ldhdYaXq3snJPhkMBq__PuIXJQvG24vTqg7E/s1600/ravenstone+logo+concepts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeYm3koMMKlQzIydAPgQLINzNlaY-pgue1r7V063HUfxbZ8DXU_R7CHe5Z1JuxPEh_sl7GPMEvCnoVORfH7EaoYFt1WLnsRhjMJ4xNE83ldhdYaXq3snJPhkMBq__PuIXJQvG24vTqg7E/s640/ravenstone+logo+concepts.jpg" width="187" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily, everyone was pretty much agreed on the best ones on this list (the sketches around the 30s), so we whittled this list down to about 3 options and I went from there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3BORUzQt1CyI0DLyXHS81809fwJRz8UPugtY1lHYsppJnviO6oWtfBbGOOYryDfo2bQ8laoTOr4s1k1Ex9RxGOn7eJWh6lwjrzyrkd7BIDmg8DhmI78kHlbZEfrMAoDlSp8fGDIo1pYI/s1600/final+3ish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3BORUzQt1CyI0DLyXHS81809fwJRz8UPugtY1lHYsppJnviO6oWtfBbGOOYryDfo2bQ8laoTOr4s1k1Ex9RxGOn7eJWh6lwjrzyrkd7BIDmg8DhmI78kHlbZEfrMAoDlSp8fGDIo1pYI/s400/final+3ish.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I ended up taking the type idea from the bottom right one, and adapting the top 3 into one idea (1d). The only thing I really didn't plan for in the sketches was flipping the raven so he comes towards you rather than facing away. Once I'd started working in illustrator he just didn't look right with his back towards you, and by having his head facing forwards I could make the eye and beak bigger and more prominent, which gives him a bit more character.<br />
Here are some alternative colour options. I'm hoping to expand on these, adapting the colours to match whatever art the logo has to sit on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkXahyphenhyphenGiUTB4KKkUXBSCkjzLfeE0exAh3E9EHGQTg8pTjzfMNlncXl75UUpbQ8OmIoQd69hqmGnoHxQ89PK7CYCL-woFoNyg8RpqChWwM5yYrxtuc8vA_OqkgdEc-L0o1-IzwOYaeyG2A/s1600/ravenstone_colour_logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkXahyphenhyphenGiUTB4KKkUXBSCkjzLfeE0exAh3E9EHGQTg8pTjzfMNlncXl75UUpbQ8OmIoQd69hqmGnoHxQ89PK7CYCL-woFoNyg8RpqChWwM5yYrxtuc8vA_OqkgdEc-L0o1-IzwOYaeyG2A/s400/ravenstone_colour_logo.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Below is the banner I came up with for the main <a href="http://www.ravenstone.com/" target="_blank">Ravenstone website</a>. I took the basic logo and changed it into a full illlustration, drawn using a combination of vectors from InDesign and Illustrator, then adding some texture and shadows etc in Photoshop. I'm quite keen to go back to this and either animate (the windmill could move, the grass and tree could wave in the wind, the bird could fly in and land! quite excited by the options here) or add detail to it as time goes on. This is a kid's book line after all, and I'd really like the website to be as visually interesting as possible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja1B2JAsZuxstiiJ4BwHvDLlwjmHM_3TnB-6qOw7PPfzgkF2R-vZ9LhqZbBFoQe7jmA8jcpHRR0lHwP2m4lZHUN0DSi-2HNY3mKKMLhdRmarRyB8TahnMBARuLVu9cis74ZcxpF_VLbrQ/s1600/ravenstone.com+banner+art.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="103" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja1B2JAsZuxstiiJ4BwHvDLlwjmHM_3TnB-6qOw7PPfzgkF2R-vZ9LhqZbBFoQe7jmA8jcpHRR0lHwP2m4lZHUN0DSi-2HNY3mKKMLhdRmarRyB8TahnMBARuLVu9cis74ZcxpF_VLbrQ/s400/ravenstone.com+banner+art.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next job is to make the Ravenstone typography into a full, workable font which I'm in the process of doing now. Been teaching myself to use Fontographer, so it'll be one of my first jobs with that. So far I've only worked out the lower case letters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I did the covers for the first printing of the story in the Meg several years ago, and they were bloody atrocious - so I was glad Tharg let me do something new... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSU5J3Mg5-nc8DFZ6q0UFZwzLe9dS-au5fEs7ZnjJEDSx3WvBFQSYxM6UzN6vsaPeAobbCvbJ78OKNq_a80Itflo1LGMPvKuJceeQezDonTQWZv_C2XDooj02KNToXg1-hpndlOHdEsVs/s1600/RATFINK+COVER+final+blue.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSU5J3Mg5-nc8DFZ6q0UFZwzLe9dS-au5fEs7ZnjJEDSx3WvBFQSYxM6UzN6vsaPeAobbCvbJ78OKNq_a80Itflo1LGMPvKuJceeQezDonTQWZv_C2XDooj02KNToXg1-hpndlOHdEsVs/s400/RATFINK+COVER+final+blue.png" width="292" /></a></div>
<br />
I was gonna go with an unused bit of art I did at the same time as the first lot of covers, just updating it a little bit, so started re-doing the pizen ball, then changed my mind and used it as the basis for the new picture above. Pretty much the only thing that survived was the texture and the border! It was orange like the original painting to start with, but I decided to go with a more muted palette to match Pete Doherty's strip art. His colours are always fabulous, really natural, so it seemed stupid to stick a <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">REALLY REALLY ORANGE</span></b> bit of art on the front. Hence the blue!<br />
Below are the original unused cover, the orange version of the above, and the final image without coverlines and logos. I dropped the skyline down fairly shortly after altering the colour, cos the sun and rocks and stuff got wiped out by the logos.<br />

Although these are the simplest of the 4 waves of artwork, they almost took the most time to do. Apart from setting the style for the rest of the campaign I also had to come up with a way to represent each of the 3 characters as a minimal but relevant symbol. Myself, Mike Molcher, the PR bot and Luke, the other 2000 AD designer, knocked around loads of ideas before settling on the 3 symbols shown here.<br />

Judge Mortis was by far the hardest to come up with. How do you describe decay or entropy in a few stylised lines? I don't think I've not seen a single person guess what that symbol means yet unfortunately... it's a pile of smoking ash. Almost the hideous aftermath of Mortis' touch. I got the idea from watching Dr. Brian Cox explaining entropy on TV using a pile of sand, which I remember being pretty cool. The other two are slightly more obvious - an eye for Fear (he has loads them inside his helmet in one story, and there's plenty of wide-eyed victims in Brian Bolland's art) and flames (duh?) for Fire. I was worried, knowing their meanings, that everyone would guess them straight away. Luckily only one guy guessed correctly - and nobody seemed to notice!<br />

Below are the initial ideas I came up with in InDesign for various stages of the campaign before it started. Almost everything on here was changed on the final versions. Notice I started off doing a matching poster for Judge Death as well (just for completeness sake, and my own bloody-mindedness) but soon had to stop as the art got more complex and deadlines loomed!</div>

The third week was all about face shots. We pretty much expected everyone with 1/2 a brain to have got the hint by now, so we changed the text a bit. Si Spurrier came up with the idea of using GAZE, BURN and DECAY instead of the Judge's name running along the bottom, which fitted with the theme we'd set really nicely. Just glad we didn't have to come up with a Judge Death version for that. What would we have written? CRIME? LIFE? I dunno. It still annoys me I can't think of a good one (even though it has no bearing at all...)<br />

Had a bit of a false start with these ones. After banging out Fear very quickly and satisfactorily I made a bit of a balls up of Mortis and Fire - both of which where far too illustrative. I had to quickly redo both on deadline day after a hurried chat with Molcher. He was apologetic but absolutely right in thinking they don't match the look of any of the other bits of art, so I changed them. I kind of knew they weren't right, but I'd run out of steam on Friday night and was a bit stuck. Just as I was getting panicky, Luke helped me out by coming up with a much cooler, more stylised version of my original skull picture, which kind of kick-started the mortis one. The original pictures are below.</div>

The last thing we did at the campaign climax was to black out the 2000 AD website for a day when the prog came out, replacing it instead with the image below.<br />

Cover art for <i>The Alleyman</i> by Pat Kelleher, out in August from Abaddon Books. I painted the top half about 4 months ago, then had to leave it for ages. I only got time to finish the bottom part last week.<br />
The plane is a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, which I finished separately then added in. Hopefully we'll get it printed up as a promotional postcard or something nearer the book's release date, as I think it looks cool on it's own.<br />

<br />
Bad Blood is an ebook novella by Chuck Wendig, which follows on from his previous Abaddon book <i><a href="http://pyeparr.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/final-cover-art-and-design-for-double.html" target="_blank">Double Dead</a></i>. Originally the cover was gonna be quite different (similar to the Double Dead cover), but I had to get something put together as a placeholder image for the 2012 catalogue, which I always intended to go back to later. In end everyone thought this was so striking we left it as it was.<br />
